What Causes Heart Disease ?

Our body is like a machine with every part acting as a cog in the wheel, working together as a whole. Each part has its own function, and is indispensable for a healthy body. In cases where the body does not function properly, it is susceptible to many diseases, each part of which has its own unique disorders. This is applicable for the heart too.

Heart diseases or disorders are all about the disruption in the supply of blood and oxygen to the heart due to various reasons. The muscles of the heart require oxygen for their untiring pumping action. However, the supply of oxygen to the heart can be disrupted by a clot in arteries. Under the worst circumstances, it results in heart attack, or myocardial infarction.

The muscles of the heart, which require continuous supply of oxygen, die or infarct when their requirement is left unfulfilled. This leads to infarction in parts of the heart, called as myocardial infarction or simply heart attack. This causes acute pain in the chest, breathlessness and eventually can lead to heart failure and death.

Cholesterol is one of the most important factors causing heart diseases. It is found in fats and lipids, both in the body as well as in other food materials. High level of cholesterol can be extremely harmful as it is not easily disposed of. When present in the bloodstream at high level, cholesterol is usually associated with the hardening of the arteries and as such coronary heart disease. Unsaturated cholesterol gets deposited on the walls of the arteries, eventually clogging the arteries and affecting the supply of blood. It also increases blood pressure.

There are other factors that increase the risk of heart diseases like obesity, smoking, stress and inactive lifestyle. People with kidney diseases and diabetes also are at a high risk of heart disease.
