I Want To Become a Medical Research Assistant

With the growing interest towards health care professions and rapidly evolving diseases, there is an increased demand for qualified health care professionals. One of the most challenging medical professions is to become a medical research assistant.

A medical research assistant can be described as a multi-skilled professional who is engaged in sample collection and processing, and coordinating research information. A medical research assistant also undertakes certain other primary responsibilities such as arrangement, performance and recording of field interviews, identification of probable subjects suitable for the research and assisting physicians in the arrangement of interview schedules.

Becoming a qualified medical research assistant is a tough task. In order to become a certified medical research assistant, the person must have graduated from an accredited medical assisting program. Usually, many research institutions offer such programs, which are accredited either by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES). After graduating from the program, the person must clear the AAMA CMA certification examination. These exams are administered by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA).

Being a medical research assistant involves constant interaction with people. Hence, a qualified medical research assistant should be an amiable person who is always willing to listen to the people surrounding him, including the patients and research supervisors. Since medical research assistants can perform clinical, clerical and administrative tasks, they are highly preferred by most of the companies and research organizations. Salaries and promotions in this profession are commensurate with experience.
